PLEASE! IF BOXBEL ISN'T RUNNING VERY WELL ON YOUR SYSTEM, THEN
PLEASE DROP ME A NOTE! INCLUDE YOUR LOGFILE WHICH CAUSED THE
BUG. I'M TRYING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO MAKE BOXBEL RUN SMOOTHLY.
Tommy Roeder 2:244/8001
+++++++ BOXBEL/tr Version 3.14 +++++++
An automatic callers-to-my-bbs-creator for
QuickBBS
running with
D'Bridge or FrontDoor
(in fact it works nice even without QuickBBS :-)
REMEMBER TO READ BOXBEL.NEW!!!
We had a statistic-overview of the human callers
to our BBSs available to our users (the
corresponding program looked at the system-logfile).
Now there have been some users wondering why the
system is busy so often even if there haven't been any
users since hours in the BBS according to the
mentioned statistic-file. The answer is easy: Some
other fido-system did a filerequest or was exchanging
mail with our fido-mailer. We saw that there is need
for a program that not only processes the system- but
also reads the mailer-logfile and extracts the made
connections. BOXBEL was born (the word "boxbel" is put
together by the two german words "(Mail)Box" and
"Belegung" which means something like "system usage").
This very fast and easy to use program so reads
DBRIDGE.LOG or FD.LOG (or whatever you named your
FrontDoor-logfile) and SYSTEM.LOG and filters
out all made connections with your BBS. The result is
sorted by date and time and put into two textfiles
BOXBEL.ASC (monochrom version) and BOXBEL.ANS
(colo(u)r version). The BOXBEL-configuration-file
allows you to change the name of these two files.
For QuickBBS-Sysops: Set the path where to write
these textfiles to in the boxbel-configuration-file
pointing to your QuickBBS-textdirectory and create a
menu-type 5 command to let your users read these files.
Users which didn't get access to your system
(typed wrong password three times and so on) are
skipped automatically.
These files are included in this package:
-----------------------------------------
BOXBEL.NEW -----> READ THIS!!!
BOXBEL.EXE -----> BOXBEL main-program
BOXBEL.CFG -----> configuration-file for BOXBEL
BOXBEL.DOC -----> the english document (you are
reading it right now)
BOXBEL.REV -----> BOXBEL revision-history
BOXBEL can be put to downloading areas of BBSes if:
- the original archive isn't changed in any way
except compression method
- the archive contains all files of the original
distribution archive
! We don't want any money for the program but we want to
! know who is using BOXBEL and how he (or she) is satisfied
! with it. In fact BOXBEL was hard work over months.
Installation of BOXBEL:
-----------------------
1. What you need:
- QuickBBS
- D'Bridge or FrontDoor
(NOTE: BOXBEL/tr is only tested with
FrontDoor! If you want a tested
D'Bridge-Version then write to
Werner Niedermeier, 2:246/2!)
BOXBEL knows whether you are using D'Bridge or
FrontDoor: If the last seven characters of your
mailer-logfile-name (in BOXBEL.CFG) are "dbridge.log"
then it is assumed that you prefer D'Bridge,
everything else is regarded as a FrontDoor-Logfile.
2. The configuration-file BOXBEL.CFG:
Take a text-editor and modify BOXBEL.CFG to
your needs. We tried everything possible to make
the config-file self-explaining. Please be sure not
to change the order of the lines and not to insert
any empty lines. Remarks are preceeded by a
semicolon on the first position of the line. Don't
forget the trailing backslash when changing the
pathname to your textdirectory. It is
wise to put a ";" before the example-configuration
shipped with BOXBEL. So if you don't remember quite
well later you have the original statements to help
you setting up the file.
If you don't want to exclude a name from the
lists (see BOXBEL.CFG) then mark this line with
"---".
Next thing to do is to insert BOXBEL in your
batchfile which runs your mailbox. You can call
BOXBEL every time a user leaves your system
(recommended) or once a day or whenever you like.
Running BOXBEL (command-line parameters):
-----------------------------------------
BOXBEL needs at least two command-line parameters.
Three more are optional. The correct syntax is:
BOXBEL /{D|E} /Unnn [/Q] [/R] [/NOCTL]
/D --> BOXBEL creates german ("deutsch") messages
and statistic-files
/E --> BOXBEL runs in "english-mode" (nice, eh?)
/Unnn The number "nnn" tells BOXBEL the maximum of
entries to include in the final statistic-
files. So if you want the last twenty calls
to your system included in BOXBEL.A?? then
you have to run BOXBEL like this:
boxbel /e /u20
If there are less entries found in the
mailer- and QuickBBS-logfile then BOXBEL
also puts less entries into the statistic-
file. When BOXBEL is running it shows you
the number of entries found in the
two logfiles. The last "/Unnn" entries are
then filtered out and sorted. This version
of BOXBEL is limited to a total number
of 5000 entries to proceed (which actually
means that your logfiles are some Megabytes
long...). If you find this to be not
enough then you better should think of doing
a regular clean-up of your system.
The next options are really optional:
/Q --> Quiet-mode. The line-counters aren't displayed.
This maybe somewhat faster on some systems but
you will miss the nice counters...
/R --> Reverse-Date-Mode. Default is to sort the entries
from the eldest to the newest entry. If you specify
/R then BOXBEL puts the newest entries on the top
which is recommended by us.
/NOCTL --> Normally BOXBEL puts special ctrl-chars at the
end of its reports. If displayed by QuickBBS the
user is then prompted to press any key. If you don't
want this, because you are running any other BBS or
you want to include the reports into a message then
use this parameter. BOXBEL will then design BOXBEL.ASC
as plain ASCII.
/GR --> Display nive graphix-bar when running.
/SN --> Display Sysopnames rather than Systemnames.
We hope that you find BOXBEL to be as useful as we do!
